About our farming
Lakefield Organics is a decidedly small scale, local food type of farm, located just outside Lakefield, Ontario. We are a tiny farm!
Our farming here at Lakefield is a continuation of the six years of certified organic veggie gardening started about 30km away in Dunsford. You can see what we’ve been up to so far at Tiny Farm Blog.
Most of our market gardening is done by hand, using basic garden tools—there’s lots of hoeing and much hand-pulling of weeds. We also use some powered equipment, including a walking rototiller, and a compact tractor for turning compost and tilling up garden beds. Big tractor work is limited to the occasional times when we are preparing new garden areas at the beginning and end of the season.
Of course, we grow without the use of synthetic inputs. That means, no pesticides and no artificial fertilizers. Instead, we use floating row cover to protect plants from insect pests. We pick some bugs by hand. And we use compost and green manure crops for fertility. We are also inspected annually and certified organic by Pro-Cert Canada.
Our weekly harvest is determined by the simple procedure of checking the crops to see what is perfectly ready to be picked. Everything we produce is naturally field-ripened. Our fresh, hand-selected veggies, herbs and flowers usually reach you within 24 hours of harvest.
You can drop by the farm at any time during the season to see how your veggies grow. We’re always happy to chat and show you around. Really, there is little that is more deeply reassuring and satisfying than knowing exactly where your food comes from!
